The story takes place in an undisclosed location in the Canadian wilderness. It is summertime and the area is heavily wooded and next to an L shaped lake.

List all of the main characters in the book, and share a little bit of information about each character.:

Brian Robeson is the main character. He narrates the story and it is read from his point of view. Brian is a normal 13 yr. old boy who gets his knowledge from TV shows, school and the human survival instinct. He learns by trial and error and survives alone in the wild for 2 months with his trusty hatchet.

The pilot: Jim or Jake. Brian doesn’t remember his name. He died at the beginning of the book.

Divorced parents

Mother: gave gift of hatchet to Brian for trip.

Father: working Canadian oil fields and waiting for Brian to spend summer with him.

If there was a problem presented in the book, write three (3) sentences about it. Otherwise, write three sentences about your favorite part of the book.:

Brian is enroute to visit his father for the summer in the Canadian oil fields. The pilot of the bush plane has a heart attack and dies. Communication has been lost and the pilot veered off course during the heart attack.

Brian has never flown a plane before.

Brian has some difficult decisions to make, the plane is running out of gas and he has to find a clearing or lake in order to land. If he survives he is totally alone and must rely only on himself.

If there was a problem presented in the book, write three (3) sentences about how the problem was solved. If there was not problem, write three sentences about what you would have liked to have seen in the book that the author did not include.:

In this book Brian encounters many problems including: finding shelter, starting and keeping fire, preserving food, dangerous animals, making tools, and a lot more.

My favorite problem and that which I feel I can benefit from happens when Brian is trying to spear a fish with a spear he made. He repeatedly spears at fish not making contact with any. He tries the spear in the water and above the water. No luck. Brian remembers a science lesson from school on water and refraction, makes adjustments, and BAM he finally gets a fish.

I loved everything about this book. From beginning to end! I loved the excitement of new discoveries and survival by your own wits.

This book is so real. I can read this book over and over and never be bored. I find something new all the time.
