hatchetSETTING
The story takes place in the remote Canadian wilderness. The author doesn’t tell the reader exactly when the story takes place but I think it happened during the 90’s since the boy doesn’t have a cell phone.
GENRE
Fiction – Realistic
CHARACTERS / SUBJECT MATTER
The main character is 13-year old Brian Robeson. He is from New York City and he is going to visit his dad for the summer.
PROBLEM, CONFLICT or FAVORITE PART
Brian was flying in a small bush plane, a Cessna 406, when the pilot had a heart attack. Brian piloted the plane until it crashed into an L-shaped lake. Brian survived the crash and had to survive alone in the wilderness. The only thing he had was a hatchet his mother had given him before he left on the plane.
CONCLUSION
Brian learned new skills everyday to help him survive. He learned how to make and shoot a bow, how to spear fish, how to make a shelter and how to build a fire. Also, Brian retrieved a survival pack from the plane and used the transmitter to signal for help. Another pilot, a wilderness guide, heard the radio signal and rescued Brian.
RATING

Hatchet is a really good book.  I felt happy reading this book because it had a good ending.  I liked reading about all the skills Brian learned.  I want to read more books about survival.
