caySETTING
The story takes place on the cay, a low island made of coral and sand, somewhere in the Caribbean.  It takes place in 1942 during World War II.
GENRE
Historical Fiction
CHARACTERS / SUBJECT MATTER
The main characters are Phillip an 11-year-old American boy, whose family is presently living in Curacao, and Timothy, an elderly black, West Indian sailor.
PROBLEM OR CONFLICT
Phillip’s island is under attack so his mother decided that Phillip and her had to go back to Norfolk, Virginia.  When he was heading to Norfolk, their ship got torpedoed.  Phillip survived but was stuck on a raft with Timothy, who was part of the crew on the ship, and Stew cat the Chef’s cat.  Phillip and Timothy are stranded on an island called the cay, also known as the Devil’s Mouth, and Phillip is blind because he hit his head on the raft really hard.
FAVORITE PART OR CONCLUSION
My favorite part of the story was when Phillip learned that Timothy’s skin color didn’t matter.
The book made me feel like I want to go survive on an island just like them.
RATING

I really like survival and this was a really good book that made me think that if they could do it i could do it!
