The class started off with a reading of The Mitten. Afterwards, the children made decorative snowflakes out of coffee filters which were beautifully colored with watercolor paint.
Yearbook Portraits
This week Jeff brought in a bunch of cool equipment so the Photons could experiment with lighting and take portraits for the yearbook.
Math Art
Today, we made spirolateral math art. I can’t quite put into words what that means, but find an Electron and they should be able to show you! We used multiplication, skip counting, graphing and patterning in our art.
Peer Reviews
We continued peer revision, with everyone offering feedback to three more of our young authors. Six more muons need to share and gather feedback, maybe two more classes? Then we will spend some time writing new and improved 2nd drafts!
Peers
We recorded our completed first drafts on the front page of our writing folder, choose one draft to continue working on, and filled out Peer Response forms to ask for feedback from our peers. Then we did a sample whole
Buttermilk
For Science, the electrons made some delicious butter. They experimented with adding salt or sugar and even made some whipped cream. We briefly talked about how Heavy whipping cream is made and how the agitation starts to separate the fat
Ponds
We started by coloring pond scenes and reading “Over and Under the Pond” by Kate Messner. Then we looked at birds, first building up our vocabulary by doing a group fill-in-the-blanks exercise around the parts of a bird (e.g., crest,
Symmetry
We read the book “Seeing Symmetry” to complement our work from the previous week. Since the book mentioned snow flakes, we did a science experiment with baking soda and hair conditioner to make snow. The Electrons were challenged to research
Rain Forests
We had so much fun in this class that the time flew! I was concerned that the excitement from the potluck lunch might have the neutrons too energized to sit and listen to books and work one projects. Instead, they
Winter
Today we started our winter exploration with a group project of a winter-themed collage. We created snowflakes, snowman, winter animals and other cool items. We will continue our project next week.
