For our first art project of the new session, we talked about Native Americans’ Day which was celebrated Friday, Sept 27 in some parts of the country. We discussed that all tribes are unique with unique cultures, beliefs, and histories. Some tribes (along the northwestern United States, Canada, and Alaska) used Totem Poles to remember important stories in their cultures.
We created our own totem poles from paper towel rolls. The craft was inspired by: https://kinderart.com/art-lessons/multic/mini-paper-roll-totems/
As sometimes happens, I expected this to be a pretty straightforward project but it turned out to be trickier than anticipated! But the group persevered and got through it, with some creative and unique looking poles. Some students chose not to do a pole at all, but used their creativity to make animals from other materials (such as pipe cleaners) that we were working with.
