We started by coloring pond scenes and reading “Over and Under the Pond” by Kate Messner. Then we looked at birds, first building up our vocabulary by doing a group fill-in-the-blanks exercise around the parts of a bird (e.g., crest, throat, wingbars). Next, looking at pictures of different birds, we shared and wrote descriptions. And finally we played a game: everyone was given a laminated bird identification sheet, and one of us had to describe a picture of a bird while the group guessed the bird.
