Judith Rossell

Fantasy Action/Adventure Mystery
What is the setting of the book?
Most of the book takes place inside the Institute, a place where girls are supposed to learn sewing and cleaning. The main characters wander around the town.
Who is/are the main character(s)? What are they like?
The main character is Maggie Fishbone. She is a brave, rebellious girl who gets sent to the Midwatch. Her friends include Nell, who is very smart and shy, Sofie, who is serious and kind, and Harriet. Harriet is very funny. I enjoyed her character a lot. She also has a sense of adventure and quick thinking.
What is the conflict of the story?
The girls at the Midwatch secretly learn fencing, spying, and other activities. They solve crimes in the city. Someone named Miss Fenchurch is kidnapped, and Maggie, Nell, Sofie, Harriet, and some other girls take the case.
What was the conclusion of the book?
They follow the trail down to a silver airship. Harriet is kidnapped, and Maggie, Nell, and Sofie investigate her disappearance. They meet the Countess, an evil lady who is stealing jewels. Miss Fenchurch found one of the stolen ones. They climb onto her airship and grab a building to slow it down. Maggie and the others help everyone get to safety and rescue the other girls. In the end, the police apprehend the Countess and the first years are honored.
While reading the book, what were your emotions?
It was very funny and exciting. It was a bit scary when Maggie fell from the airship, but she was fine after. I was laughing a lot. It had a lot of action in it.
Do you think the book had a moral? If so, what was it?
I don’t think it had a moral. The main characters were being treated differently just because they were girls, so maybe it was “treat other people as you wish to be treated.”
