What is the setting of the book?
The book takes place in Beeton, a made-up town. It goes around Beeton to different locations like the bandstand, swimming pool, and the houses.
Who is/are the main character(s)? What are they like?
The main character is Stuart Horten, who recently moved to Beeton. He is very brave and funny, but is also pretty sarcastic and is annoyed easily. His neighbors are twins– April, May, and June. April is funny, smart, but pretty nosy too. There is also Jeannie, a greedy lady who wants to find a secret workshop.
What is the conflict of the story?
Stuart finds a note from his great-uncle Tony Horten, a magician. He sets out to find Tony’s workshop, filled with magical mechanisms. Jeannie tries to find it before him, but it is rightfully his. He makes friends with April, his neighbor, and eventually finds the key to the workshop!
What was the conclusion of the book?
Stuart opens the workshop but Jeannie, who is really the mayor, tries to stop him from getting the workshop. They have a fight, and Stuart accidentally steps into the Well of Wishes–a mechanism designed to grant you a wish. Tony and his wife Lily went through it. Stuart wishes to see them before blacking out. He finds them content in another world, and then says goodbye. He travels back to the workshop and when a reporter asks him how he knows so much about the workshop, he answers happily, “Because it’s mine!”
While reading the book, what were your emotions?
It was REALLY tense when they were trying to open a lockbox with the key to the workshop inside it. And it made me mad when Jeannie tried to get the workshop. It was rightfully Stuart’s. But it was action-packed and very exciting.
Do you think the book had a moral? If so, what was it?
I think the moral is, “don’t take something that is rightfully someone else’s.” Jeannie kept trying to steal the workshop, but Stuart owned it because he was related to Tony. Don’t steal anything. Give it to the person it belongs to.
