What is the setting of the book?
It starts out on Tom’s farm, then goes to different towns. Most of it occurs in the forest, which is very sylvan and green. It takes place a long time ago, in the age of kings, guards, and peasants.
Who is/are the main character(s)? What are they like?
The main character is a dog named Rebel. He is brave and loves his human, Tom, very much. He goes with Tom everywhere. Tom is a kind 13-year old boy who loves to draw, take action, and spend time with Rebel. The king is a rich man who keeps raising taxes, which makes everyone poor and unhappy.
Jaxon is a wild dog who seems grumpy and mean, but really likes being with Rebel. He thinks dogs shouldn’t have “masters”.
What is the conflict of the story?
When the king raises taxes even higher, Tom’s family cannot pay them. Tom decides to join the Reds, a group of freedom-fighters who plan to overthrow the king. Tom runs away and Rebel is heartbroken. He embarks on a journey to try to find Tom and bring him home again. On the way, he meets a wild dog named Jaxon.
What was the conclusion of the book?
Rebel finds the Reds being chased back because they’re afraid of the guards. Rebel is not afraid, and he runs across to find Tom. The Reds, now encouraged, charge the castle and win. The country becomes a democracy with low taxes.
Rebel gets Tom to a hospital, where he recovers. Rebel becomes a hero. Tom comes back to the farm, and Rebel becomes happier than ever.
While reading the book, what were your emotions?
I was worried Tom would die at the end of the book, and there were many sad parts. But it was very exciting and full of action, which made me want to see what happened next.
Do you think the book had a moral? If so, what was it?
I don’t think it had a moral, but one of the themes was companionship. Rebel didn’t give up looking for Tom, which was very brave. A couple times he got discouraged, but Rebel always kept looking. Another theme was how loyal Rebel was. Tom was his favorite person in the world, and Rebel loved him and would do anything for him.
Star Rating
Selected Value: 9 (0 min / 10 max)
Why did you give the book this rating?
It was very detailed and gripping. The story had a great plot, and the characters were quite developed. I liked how the book was long but interesting. I think I’d rate it 8 or 9.
What was your favorite/least favorite part?
My favorite part was when the Reds take the castle and Tom and Rebel are reunited. It’s very happy and satisfying, and they head back home. My second favorite is probably when Rebel meets Jaxon.
Would you recommend this book to others? Why?
Definitely! Dog lovers will really enjoy this book, but I think anyone will like this if they are OK with a little bit of drama in the book. I really enjoyed it because Rebel’s dedication to life being the same makes him a strong main character.
