What is the setting of the book?
The first setting is in a town called Riverview, but most of it is in the woods. At the end, the main character goes to a park called Mammoth Cave.
Who is/are the main character(s)? What are they like?
The main characters are Aubrey, Mari, Joel, and Teagan. Aubrey feels like they don’t fit in, because they aren’t a boy but aren’t a girl. Mari is Aubrey’s friend, and is very alert and perceptive. Joel is Aubrey’s best friend, but he is quite different. Finally, Teagan is Aubrey’s sister but is kind of boring.
What is the conflict of the story?
Joel runs away from Riverview because he doesn’t fit in either. He floats down the Green River on a raft. Aubrey and Mari set out to find him, and Teagan joins later on. Unfortunately, Teagan runs back and tells the community they’re looking for him. They’ve already found so many clues!
What was the conclusion of the book?
When their parents find them, Mari, Teagan, and Aubrey fake going to the bathroom. Aubrey climbs up to a window and escapes. All the clues pointed toward Mammoth Cave National Park.

After stealing a canoe, Aubrey finds Joel and brings him back. The story ends with them saying goodbye to Joel, who is traveling to Louisville with his mom.
While reading the book, what were your emotions?
Sometimes I felt scared or uneasy, like when they met a venomous copperhead snake. It was mostly exciting, though. I felt relieved when Joel came back.
Do you think the book had a moral? If so, what was it?
“You don’t have to be a ‘he’ or a ‘she’ and marry your opposite sex.” This book put a lot of pressure on Aubrey, because they were born a girl but don’t want to be called that.
