What is the setting of the book?
The setting of the book is in Miami. There is a school called Culeco which the main characters go to. They also visit the hospital.
Who is/are the main character(s)? What are they like?
The main character is Sal Vidon. He is a smart teenager who goes to Culeco. He is also a magician-in-training. Another student at the school is Gabi Real, who is very sassy and curious. She is a journalist for the school paper, and they fight a lot before becoming friends. Sal’s padres (parents) are Papi and his Stepmom.
What is the conflict of the story?
Sal is not just a magician. He can rip holes in the universe! He uses this power to change things for another version of them in a different universe. Gabi soon realizes that she can see them too, and they go on a journey to try to fix the holes. However, Sal opens some more. And to top it all off, Gabi’s brother Ignacio is in the hospital and might die!
What was the conclusion of the book?
Sal and Gabi open another hole to try and find a cure for Iggy’s sickness. They find another Sal and Gabi, who are trying to save their own Iggy. Soon Sal helps all of them connect the babies between universes and make them both healthy. Sal2 and Gabi2 (from the other universe) agree. They save Iggy and travel back to their universe!
While reading the book, what were your emotions?
I felt scared for Iggy, because I thought he was going to die. I was relieved when they saved him, though. I laughed out loud at some parts (literally!). The book was HILARIOUS — once, Sal got mad and told Gabi to go on a flying taco.
Do you think the book had a moral? If so, what was it?
I don’t think it had a moral, but one of the themes was connection. Sal and Gabi finally overcame their differences and became friends. Their relationship was interesting to watch, because at first they fought but then their friendship blossomed.
