Experiment Title: | Observation of how far static electricity can stay on your body |
What was the purpose of your experiment? Provide a brief description of what you were hoping to learn, discover, or study.: | I was hoping to learn something about static electricity. I wanted to learn how far away I could walk from a Van de Graaff machine and still shock mom. |
What was your hypothesis?: | My hypothesis was that the farther away I walked from the Van de Graaff machine, the less shock I could give mom. |
What materials did you use in your experiment? List them all.: | Van de Graaff machine Hand Mother, Father or anyone would let you shock them |
What procedure was followed? Provide a brief description of the steps you followed during your experiment.: | Step 1: Find a Van de Graaff machine. Step 2: Put your hands onto it for 5 seconds. Step 3: Walk about 1 foot to mom (or anyone willing to get shocked) and touch her. See if she got shocked or didn’t get shocked.Repeat these steps, but have the person move 1-2 feet farther away each time. |
What were the results of your experiment?: | My results were that the 2 closest ones were the 2 best ones. The 2 farthest ones were the 2 worst ones. Best means the ones that had the stronger shock, worst means the ones that had the weaker shock. |
What is your conclusion after conducting the experiment? Was your hypothesis correct or incorrect?: | My hypothesis was correct. The closest ones were very good and the farthest one didn’t work at all and the second to farther worked a tiny little bit. |
Spend a few minutes learning about the scientific princples involved in your experiment. Write 3-4 sentences about what you learned and how it relates to your experiment.: | I learned that when you walk on carpet the electrons that cause static electricity are attracted to the carpet. That reduces my charge. Then when I touch mom, some of my electrons still want to go to mom and that shocks her. But the farther away mom gets, the less charge I have left, so then it doesn’t give her as much of a shock. |
