What is the setting of the book?
The time is during the Depression. Part of it takes place in Ottawa, Illinois, and also inChicago. They also drive down to a carnival in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
Who is/are the main character(s)? What are they like?
Josh and Joey are brothers. They run away from home because Josh doesn’t like his dad. Josh is really sensitive and angry; he has a short temper. Joey’s really nice, almost theopposite of Josh. They usually get along really well, but Josh starts fights.
What is the conflict of the story?
Josh doesn’t like his dad (as I mentioned), and they run away from home. They get lost, then find a place to stay, then get lost again. They get a job at a carnival, and meet an adult called Lonnie. After a while, Josh gets separated from Joey and Lonnie takes him in.
What was the conclusion of the book?
Lonnie finds Joey in the hospital, and brings him back to Josh. Everyone Josh and Joey love want them to go back home. At the end of the story, Josh and Joey take a train to Chicago, back to their house. Lonnie says he’ll be okay in Ottawa.
While reading the book, what were your emotions?
I was really excited when they met Lonnie, because maybe he would take them in. He’s areally nice person. I really liked Janie, Lonnie’s niece; she had a really nice relationship with Josh. I was kind of sad at the end that they couldn’t stay with Lonnie.
Do you think the book had a moral? If so, what was it?
One of the lessons was to keep going, and don’t give up. Even when things are really hard for you. Josh and Joey didn’t just give up and go back to Chicago.
