The Neutrons last week investigated leaves on a nature walk and pavilion activity. First we looked at a book about some different types of leaves in our area, we touched and studied samples I brought from my neighborhood, and discussed what we already know about leaves. Then we walked a short path and picked up our own leaves, trying to find if we had the same or different types from the samples I brought. Once we got back to the pavilion, the kids worked together to separate the leaves into groups based on species. We discovered that different trees grow in the forest preserve than in my neighborhood, and that leaves from different types of trees can look similar. Finally, they had the option of tracing, drawing freehand, or doing a crayon rubbing to create a leaf book of their own.
They are a fun and active group and I look forward to investigating nature more with them this semester!
