The Neutrons did a maple syrup investigation today. First we read/discussed a bit about how syrup is made, and then we examined 3 types of syrup (two made from corn syrup and one pure maple syrup) – many interesting observations were made about coloring, viscosity, and – finally – taste! We ended by attempting to make a bar graph of our favorite syrups. 2 Neutrons preferred Mrs. Butterworth while 4 preferred the pure maple syrup. No one favored the Kroger brand. Interestingly, a few of them were totally repulsed by the corn syrups even with our “blind” investigation. I’m thinking of using future sessions to build on the little start we had at graphing today – stay tuned!
