Experiment Title

Evaporation

What was the experiment about?

Testing what conditions make water evaporate the fastest.

What was your hypothesis?

My hypothesis was that water in a tin pan and open glass jar would evaporate at the same rate. But that was not what happened!

What materials did you use?

Two glass jars (one opened and one with a lid), a pie tin, water, dry erase marker, windowsill with good sunlight.

Which safety precautions were necessary?

Keeping them high enough that the littles couldn’t reach them and spill or drink the water.

What steps did you take to conduct your experiment?

We gathered our materials, then put 2 TBSP of water in each container. We marked the beginning level on the jars with a marker and traced the outline of the water on the pie tin. We marked changes each day for 7 days.

What was the conclusion of the experiment?

We found that the pie tin evaporated fastest because it is reflective, and got warmer than the glass. The water was gone in 3 days. The open jar slowly evaporated on cloudy days but faster on sunny ones, it was empty in 6 days. The closed jar trapped the water, and condensation dripped back down the sides of the jar.

How much did you enjoy doing the experiment?

Selected Value: 10 (0 min / 10 max)

Explain the science of what happened.

When water gets warm or hot it evaporates and turns into a gas, water vapor.

How much did you learn?
