What is the setting of the book?
This book takes place in Colby, North Carolina. It’s a fictional small town that overlooks the Blue Ridge Mountains, which is a real mountain range.
Who is/are the main character(s)? What are they like?
Charlie Reese is an eleven year-old girl who moves to Colby from Raleigh, which is a real city in North Carolina. She loves fighting, and has made a wish every day since fourth grade. She now lives with her Aunt Bertha and Uncle Gus, who she doesn’t know at all. Bertha is kind, but knows nothing about parenting. But Bertha is doing much better than Charlie’s birth mom, who cant seem to get her feet on the ground, while her birth father aka “Scrappy,” is in the county jail again for fighting. Howard Odom is the good-hearted boy who lives just down the street, and is her back pack buddy at school. For some reason, he even forgives Charlie for being mean to him at the creek once.
What is the conflict of the story?
Charlie hates being in Colby, and she really hates the canning jars in her room and the Cinderella pillowcases that Bertha got for her. Charlie is waiting for her mom to get her feet on the ground back in Raleigh so she go back to her mother and sister Jackie. Her only friend in Colby is Howard, and the rest of the kids treat her pretty badly. One of the only things that makes living in Colby better is her dog Wishbone, who she caught in a trap that Howard helped make.
What was the conclusion of the book?
A social services lady came by to check on the living situation and said things improved in Raleigh and that they were going to come pick up Charlie in a few weeks. When Charlie is given the chance for the things she always wanted, she decides that she doesn’t actually want it anymore, and that she has everything she always wanted in Colby. Will she get the stay? Will she get sent back to Raleigh? Learn more in the book.
While reading the book, what were your emotions?
There was a lot of suspense in the book, like when Charlie was trying to catch Wishbone, and after she lost him. A few parts left me wanting to know what was going to happen next. I was on the edge of my seat for the whole book. I was angry at the social services lady who wanted to take her back to Raleigh, even though the situation hadn’t improved one bit.
Do you think the book had a moral? If so, what was it?
I would say that when you want something for a long time, when you’re given the decision, you might not want it at all. Something better might be right in front of you; you just don’t understand it yet.
Star Rating
Selected Value: 10 (0 min / 10 max)
Why did you give the book this rating?
This book could be better than All Four Stars, which was one of the best books I’ve ever read. Probably *the* best until we read this one.
What was your favorite/least favorite part?
I didn’t quite have a favorite part– I loved the entire book. But I will say that I’m quite disappointed that the upcoming sequel, Dream, will not be about Charlie, but instead another girl in Colby.
Would you recommend this book to others? Why?
I would definitely recommend this book if you like tender stories and suspense. It’s a bit different from most books that we’ve read.
