What is the setting of the book?
This book took place in East Dumpsford, New York where there is a giant landfill in the town center, and it makes the streets smell hideous on hot days. Restaurant status: inexplicably horrible, and the town newspaper actually makes you dumber for reading it. Parts of the book also take place in Manhattan, New York City.
Who is/are the main character(s)? What are they like?
Gladys Gatsby is funny, sort of emotional, has a quick wit, and always has a Plan D. Shes a cook that will never use a blow torch the right way (learned in an incident in which she set the kitchen curtains on fire.) She’s a kid that never does any of the activities on her a parents’ “Approved Activities” list and does all the activities on her parents’ “Unapproved Activities” list.
What is the conflict of the story?
When Gladys enters a New York Standard essay contest after being banned from the kitchen, her essay mistakenly lands in the applications for restaurant critic pile, just as Gilbert Gadfly, the normal restaurant critic for the New York Standard burns his tongue in a hot chocolate incident. The chief editor of the dining section picks her to review a newrestaurant in the city called, “Classy Cakes,” but the train ride is one hour, and there’s no way she can get on the train without her parents noticing.
What was the conclusion of the book?
After several suspenseful attempts to reach Classy Cakes, she finally manages to get there, and writes an all four stars review on the delicious desert bistro. Hopefully no one will find out that she’s an eleven year-old…
While reading the book, what were your emotions?
I was very amused at the “Ah, yikes, the kitchen curtains are on fire!” incident. I felt sudden rage at Gladys’ dad turning her down to go to Classy Cakes after a school assignment, and was surprised by how hard it was for her to get to Classy Cakes.
Do you think the book had a moral? If so, what was it?
Sometimes parents don’t support your dreams, but that shouldn’t stop you. There were a few lessons on friendship, but I’m not going to spoil the rest of it for you.
