What is the setting of the book?
The main setting is Stephanie’s house. She and Skulduggery travel a lot, including twice to a castle. Their Bentley—a car—is their main transportation.
Who is/are the main character(s)? What are they like?
The main character is Stephanie (who later changes her name to Valkyrie Cain). A skeleton named Skulduggery Pleasant is her companion. He is an Elemental (a type of person who can do magic). They also have a friend named Tanith Low. The antagonist is Nefarian Serpine.
What is the conflict of the story?
Serpine is after the Sceptre of the Ancients, which contains a lot of power and cannot be destroyed. But soon Stephanie (a.k.a. Valkyrie Cain) , Skulduggery, and Tanith find out that Serpine is ACTUALLY after the Book of Names, an old, ancient, book. It contains everyone’s real names inside, which is important because knowing someone’s real name gives power over them.
What was the conclusion of the book?
Serpine hunts down the sceptre and uses it to penetrate the protection of the Book of Names, which he almost takes. But Stephanie and Skulduggery arrive just before he does. Stephanie breaks her leg, and the Book of Names is destroyed. Skulduggery catches the sceptre and kills Serpine. Serpine crumbles to dust and they find that he was supposed to be dead already, but he had made a machine that kept him alive. But then they see Tanith. She was severely injured and had to be healed along with Stephanie. At the end of the book, Stephanie is able to do magic like Skulduggery, and makes a bright red flame appear in her hand.
While reading the book, what were your emotions?
Skulduggery and Stephanie make a really good team, and joke around all the time, so that made me laugh. I was scared in the parts with Serpine. He’s a really good antagonist. There was SO MUCH excitement, and I really liked that.
Do you think the book had a moral? If so, what was it?
I don’t think so. It was mostly action and adventure (but I mean that in a good way!), and even more suspense. But I think one of the lessons is: keep your identity very safe, and respect other peoples’.
