What is the setting of the book?
The book takes place in a small town — not Toronto, because Daniel moved away from Toronto. Daniel’s house is very comfortable, but Daniel’s bedroom is up the attic, which is messy.
Who is/are the main character(s)? What are they like?
There is Daniel, a young boy. He’s just moved, and he doesn’t have any friends. He’s kind of shy. There is also a talking bat. At first, the bat just says, “My name is Bat.” But then Daniel discovered that his species is megabat (a fruit bat), so they call him Megabat.
What is the conflict of the story?
Daniel and his new friend Talia want to get Megabat back to where his family lives: the island of Borneo. (At first, the bat just calls is “Papaya Premium”.)Talia’s brother Jamie catches Megabat in his pigeon cage, and Talia says, “Let him go and I’ll be your servant for a month.”
What was the conclusion of the book?
They tried to mail Megabat to Borneo, but the postman said, “No fruit! It’ll rot.” So a few weeks later, they came up with a plan to let Megabat fly himself home (after a few flying lessons). Jamie catches Megabat in a net, and when Daniel rips it open, one of Megabat’s wingtips is accidentally cut. He flies off. A few days later, Daniel gets lonely, so he sits in his backyard, watching the birds. Suddenly one of Megabat’s friends, a pigeon named Birdgirl, swoops down carrying Megabat. Birdgirl tells them he couldn’t fly home, because one of his wingtips was broken. So they take care of him. He is unconscious until they are all gathered around his nest, watching Birdgirl make a nest, and when she puts a stick on, his eyes suddenly flash open and he says, “Now yours is being silly.” (He has very poor grammar.)In the end, Megabat has to stay with Daniel forever, because of his injured wingtip. Oh, and Birdgirl commands pigeons to poop on Jamie’s head.
While reading the book, what were your emotions?
It was a very strange and exciting book! It was strange because there was a talking bat. The drawings were weird. It was really funny when he opened his eyes and said, “Now yours is being silly.”
Do you think the book had a moral? If so, what was it?
I don’t think it had a moral. But Daniel saved Megabat, so I think its theme was friendship. If you have friends, they can help you, and you won’t be lonely.
Star Rating
Selected Value: 10 (0 min / 10 max)
Why did you give the book this rating?
It was a really amazing book. Its plot was exciting: I did not know that Megabat was going to come back to Daniel’s house. I thought he would just go home and that would be the end.
What was your favorite/least favorite part?
I really liked the end, when Birdgirl is engaged to Megabat. It was really happy. Daniel is probably going to be the flower girl or something.I didn’t really have a least favorite part, because it was so good.
Would you recommend this book to others? Why?
I would really recommend it, if you like talking animals and exciting books. Megabat is really interesting because he’s a bat who’s really into Star Wars and jellyrolls.
