What is the setting of the book?
The book takes place in Seoul, South Korea, probably in the future.
Who is/are the main character(s)? What are they like?
Jinwoo Sung is an E-rank hunter (the lowest rank). He’s extremely bad at his job, and he hates it. He only does it because he needes the money to pay for his mother’s hospital bills and his sister’s tuition.
What is the conflict of the story?
When Sangshik Kim’s raid party comes across a rare Double-Dungeon, they take a vote and decide to enter. But this dungeon isn’t a D-rank one like the previous one – no, it could possibly be higher than an A rank. It could be an S rank dungeon, which is near impossible to complete unless you are highly, highly skilled. And that party isn’t.
What was the conclusion of the book?
Jinwoo gets everyone who hasn’t been killed out of the dungeon, although it’s at a cost – he stays back, and just as he’s about to die, he gets a message offering him to be a “Player” or else he’ll die. He accepts the request, and wakes up in the hospital.
While reading the book, what were your emotions?
Although not really a horror, the book was definitely scary. It made me shiver sometimes, and it had some interesting turns.
Do you think the book had a moral? If so, what was it?
No, it didn’t have one.
Star Rating
Selected Value: 9 (0 min / 10 max)
Why did you give the book this rating?
The artwork was amazing, the story was amazing, the pacing was amazing. It was all amazing! The artwork definitely can make or break a graphic novel, and the artwork in Solo Leveling “made” it.
What was your favorite/least favorite part?
I loved the whole boss fight with the god creature. Also, probably my absolute favorite part is the page the boss’s face turns demonic. Literally when I read that part shivers ran down my spine. The artist did an amazing job with it. I also loved how the three commandments were brought into the resolution!
Would you recommend this book to others? Why?
I would!! You’ve gotta be able to handle mediocre/major blood/gore, swearing, scariness and suspense, dark themes, etc. Basically it’s a dark book. I would say that it’s probabably best for 10+ audiences but only if you can handle pretty serious blood and dark themes.
