For the next two weeks, we will be discussing “The Hero’s Journey” and how a similar framework can be found in many of our favorite hero stories. To begin, we broke into groups and took turns striking heroic poses. Then, we went over a simplified version of 3 sections of the hero’s journey (departure, initiation, and return) while the students filled out a diagram. Finally, the students went back into groups and chose a hero story (book or movie). Each person in the group was asked to draw a picture of one section of the hero’s journey relating to the chosen book/movie. Our most popular choice of heroes was Harry Potter, but we were able to brainstorm a lot of other great examples. We also polled the students to see if they could find the right definition of another random vocab word: flibbertigibbet.
