What is the setting of the book?
The setting of the book is a desert in Arizona called Nowhere. It is really hot, and it is rated “Least Livable Place in the US.”
Who is/are the main character(s)? What are they like?
There are four main characters. The first one is Gus. He is a 13 year old boy who lives in Nowhere. He is an only child. Another of the main characters is Rossi, who loves to race on her dirt bike and moved to Arizona a couple months back. Matthew is a mean boy’s friend. Matthew turns out to be nice in the end. Jesse, who is Gus’ former best friend is the last of the main characters.
What is the conflict of the story?
The conflict of the story is that the mean boy whose name is Bowe, steals Rossi’s bike so that he can win the dirt bike race. He says that the only way he’ll give it back before the race is if Gus goes to the abandoned mine and brings back a bar of gold.
What was the conclusion of the book?
Rossi, Jesse, and Matthew end up coming with Gus into the abandoned mine. They bring back gold, and Bowe gives back the bike. But he deflated one of the tires. Matthew is also planning to do the race and has his own bike, which he gives to Rossi. She wins the race.
While reading the book, what were your emotions?
I felt excited the whole time they were in the abandoned mine. I liked how, in the end, a famous dirt bike racer came to Rossi and invited her to the dirt bike racing camp.
Do you think the book had a moral? If so, what was it?
I think the story did not have a moral. I think it was just a story.
Star Rating
Selected Value: 7 (0 min / 10 max)
Why did you give the book this rating?
It was really exciting for most of it. But sometimes I just felt like there was a lot of talking and nothing going on.
What was your favorite/least favorite part?
My favorite part was when they find gold in a bag that Matthew’s great grandpa left behind when he explored the abandoned mine a few hundred years ago. My least favorite part is when Bowe gives back the bike and pops the tire. I felt very annoyed with Bowe.
Would you recommend this book to others? Why?
I would recommend it to other people because it’s very exciting, and you feel a lot of suspense. I don’t think the book itself is very suspenseful, but you’re just waiting for it to finish to see what happens in the very end.
