Who is/are the main character(s)? What are they like?
Miyax is an Eskimo teenage girl. She is clever and resourceful which comes in useful for surviving in the Alaskan wilderness. She is also extremely observant.
What is the conflict of the story?
Survival. Miyax is alone in the wilderness, trying to find her way to a harbor to sail to San Francisco to live with her pen pal. She is accepted into an Arctic wolf pack which becomes vital to her survival. This is not the only conflict in this book but it is the the main conflict.
What was the conclusion of the book?
Miyax crosses paths with two hunters and discovers her father (who she thought was dead) is living in a nearby village. Her mind still set on going to San Francisco, she visits him and learns that he has abandoned Eskimo culture. Her pet plover, and traveling partner, Tornait, dies. Miyax takes this as a sign that the Eskimo inside her has gone with Tornait and calls herself by her English name, Julie.
While reading the book, what were your emotions?
I thought the main character was interesting and the story was well written. And it gave me something to look forward to.
Do you think the book had a moral? If so, what was it?
Nature has a lot to teach. Miyax ran from an unsafe home trying to get to San Francisco, but finding herself lost in the Alaskan wilderness. Without food, survival is a daily struggle until a pack of Arctic wolves accepts her as one of their own and she learns to appreciate the wildlife more then before

Why did you give the book this rating?
Overall I highly enjoyed it. I liked how it was written and I loved the illustrations. I also liked that the main character was an Eskimo.
What was your favorite/least favorite part?
I liked how the wolves were viewed in this book, not as bloodthirsty beasts but as gentle creatures. I also liked how the wolves had separate personalities.
Would you recommend this book to others? Why?
Yes! I think anyone who loves wildlife will highly enjoy this book.
