What is the setting of the book?
It begins in Watchdog‘s yard, in the country. It’s definitely not in the city because there are only two neighbors. Watchdog‘s yard has a food bowl in one corner and a doghouse in the other corner.
Who is/are the main character(s)? What are they like?
The main characters are Sweetie, also known as Watchdog, Red, and Poky. Sweetie is a big dog who is very friendly and sensitive. When Sweetie was younger he lived with Ben and bit another dog named Fufu. Fufu bit Ben but Ben’s father thought that Sweetie bit Ben and Fufu and sent Sweetie away. This influences Sweetie to refrain from biting in the future. Red is Sweetie’s friend and is also a dog. Poky is also a small dog.
What is the conflict of the story?
Coyotes are stealing Red and Poky’s food but not Sweetie’s food. The Coyotes can’t get inside Sweetie’s house but they find a way into Sweetie’s yard. The Coyotes eventually eat Sweetie’s food. When the coyotes finish eating all the dog food they want to eat the dogs! The dogs train to fight the coyotes but Sweetie is worried that if he bites the coyotes that he will be sent away again and won’t see his friends, Red and Poky, anymore.
What was the conclusion of the book?
The coyotes return and the dogs fight the coyotes and outsmart them. During his training Sweetie overcomes his fear of biting and bites a coyote. Sweetie distracts the coyotes and Red and Poky jump out and surprise them and chase the coyotes away.
While reading the book, what were your emotions?
I felt very anxious, excited and happy while reading this book. I felt excited and anxious because I worried that Sweetie would not overcome his fear of biting and would perish to the coyotes. I felt happy when the dogs chased away the coyotes. I laughed when Sweetie drove the lead coyote into the trash can.
Do you think the book had a moral? If so, what was it?
The moral of this book is overcome your fears.
