We began our first class with a review of the Scientific Method, focusing on using prior knowledge and research to make an educated hypothesis.

We learned about pH/the power of hydrogen, and discussed a few attributes of acids vs bases before we dove into a hands-on experiment. We paired up to mix a few household acids/bases into purple cabbage juice, watching the color change before our eyes. The kids were given a chance to make a hypothesis on if their ingredients might be an acid or base, test their hypothesis, and match the color of their solution to the pH scale. In the final few minutes of class, the kids took it upon themselves to attempt to neutralize their solutions… and also see if they could make them bubble over.
