Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer |

Realistic Fiction Comedy |
What is the setting of the book? |
The setting of the book is in Virginia, at Judy Moody‘s house. They go outdoors, too: to a dude ranch, into the backyard, and to the pizza place, for instance. At the beginning of the book it’s spring, but there’s a countdown to summer. |
Who is/are the main character(s)? What are they like? |
Judy Moody and Stink are brother and sister. Stink’s real name is James Moody, but everyone calls him Stink. Judy is famous for her many moods: angry, sad, anxious, etc. Also, Aunt Opal is Judy Moody and Stink’s aunt. She is a guerrilla artist: she makes things out of craft materials and then puts them somewhere for strangers to find. |
What is the conflict of the story? |
Judy gets all her friends together and says, “We each get ten thrill points for a thing we haven’t done before, and if we get to 100 points before the end of the summer, this will be the best summer ever.” Her friends, Amy Namey and Rocky, are going away, so they have to count their thrill points individually.
Also, their teacher, Mr. Todd, gives them a pop quiz about what he’s doing this summer. It’s something cold, but nobody can guess what it is. |
What was the conclusion of the book? |
Judy Moody joins a Bigfoot Believers Association (BBA), because she thinks that if she catches Bigfoot it’ll be worth 30 thrill points at least. They see Bigfoot near the backyard, and chase after it. It hijacks an ice cream truck, and they tail it on a motorcycle. Then another member of the BBA gets his car and starts speeding after the ice cream truck too. They almost crashed into it! They stop and find out that Bigfoot is actually Zeke, the organizer of the BBA! He was dressing up as Bigfoot.
Throughout the book, Judy got thrill points for going to the dude ranch and going to the fair, etc. It doesn’t matter who got the most points; everybody had a good summer. |
While reading the book, what were your emotions? |
It was really funny and exciting when the motorcycle and the car were chasing the ice cream truck! The news team pulled up and interviewed them. The book was so funny, and made me laugh out loud. |
Do you think the book had a moral? If so, what was it? |
I don’t think the book had a moral… Maybe “Try new things!” The characters liked trying new things, and had a lot of fun doing them. |

Why did you give the book this rating? |
It was all super exciting. I really liked the adventure, and the mystery of Bigfoot. It was really funny: Stink kept making jokes, and Judy didn’t really laugh at them. |
What was your favorite/least favorite part? |
I didn’t have a least favorite part. My favorite part was the ice cream truck chase. It was really exciting and funny at the same time, a really good combination. |
Would you recommend this book to others? Why? |
I would really recommend it to everybody. It’s a really good book, and they have really good jokes. There are more Judy Moody books, too, I’d recommend those as well. |
