What is the setting of the book? |
The setting of the book is in Cambridge — England, not Massachusetts. It’s almost Christmas time, and it’s very snowy. Daisy and Hazel attend St. Lucy’s College, and the also visit another college, Maudlin College. |
Who is/are the main character(s)? What are they like? |
Daisy is really energetic, and way more into the detective spirit than Hazel. Hazel cares more about safety, and likes being at home. They get along really well, and the formed a society called the Detective Society, solving murders and other crimes — though so far they’ve only solved murders. |
What is the conflict of the story? |
Chummy, a boy, is playing tricks on his older brother, Donald. On Christmas Day, Donald is going to inherit lots and lots of money — it’s his birthday. Chummy (or so it seems) set up a fishing line, and tripped over it and fell down the stairs. He’s dead. Later, Donald is poisoned with cyanide. Daisy and Hazel have to figure out who did it. |
What was the conclusion of the book? |
They discovered it was the butler — Michael Butler! He wasn’t really a butler. He did it because Michael was secretly Donald and Chummy’s cousin, and would inherit all of the money. The police took him away to await trial. |
While reading the book, what were your emotions? |
I was really excited for most of the book, because I love murder mysteries. It’s really intense. I thought the murderer was going to be Alfred, because he had the most suspicious alibi. I didn’t think Michael did it, and I was really surprised. |
Do you think the book had a moral? If so, what was it? |
Sometimes, when you’re a detective, someone is really suspicious, but you shouldn’t skip ahead and say they did it. You should be thorough and investigate everyone. |

Why did you give the book this rating? |
I gave the book this rating because it was so exciting. I really love the characters; it’s always funny how Daisy’s really into it, and Hazel wants to stay at home. The plot was exciting, because the reader doesn’t know what’s going to happen. |
What was your favorite/least favorite part? |
I didn’t have a least favorite part; I loved all of it. My favorite part was when they discovered that Michael Butler really did it: they found a bible that showed Chummy, Donald, and Michael Butler were all part of the Melling family. |
Would you recommend this book to others? Why? |
I would recommend it to others, but it is a murder mystery book — that means people get killed. But other than that, it’s really exciting and adventurous. If you like suspense, you’ll enjoy this book. |
