The conflict of the story is that the mean boy whose name is Bowe, steals Rossi’s bike so that he can win the dirt bike race. He says that the only way he’ll give it back before the race is if Gus goes to the abandoned mine and brings back a bar of gold.

Someone is poisoned — you probably know that by reading the title! Mr. Curtis, to be precise. At first, they do not know who poisoned him. They suspect everyone, and it is tough because there are a lot of people in Fallingford.

John is arrested, because it looks like his is stealing a famous billion-dollar ruby — “The Egypt’s Fire” — from the museum. He meets the famous inspector Toadius McGee at the crime scene, and they live together while trying to find out who stole the ruby and prove that John is innocent.

There are multiple short stories in the book. So I’ll share one of them. “The painting” tells a story of Baloney painting a picture for his friend Peanut. Baloney seems not to be happy with the painting, and then Peanut arrives and offers help. Baloney agrees and covers his eyes while patiently waiting. Peanut “fixes” Baloney’s paintings by putting Baloney into the art pieces. Baloney loves the alterations and agrees that “everything is better when we are together”.

At the beginning of the book, the girls were asked to go undercover on the Marine research vessel, Sylvia, Earl, but things didn’t go exactly as planned, and the ship got hijacked. Unfortunately, the hijackers got away. Meanwhile, there has been a mole in the organization of MI6, offering the spies a lead that takes them to San Francisco, California.
